Detailed Tour Itinerary:

6-Day Highlights Tanzania Safari

Day 1 Arrival in Arusha

You will be picked up from the airport by a Major Treks representative and conveyed to your accommodation in Arusha where you will overnight, relax, and prepare in anticipation of the adventures to come.

DAY 2

Lake Manyara National Park

Your Safari Guide will greet you with a warm Tanzanian smile after breakfast at your lodgings, and together you will embark on a scenic drive to Lake Manyara National Park, located 120km west of Arusha. This relatively small yet diverse park is named after the shallow salt lake that covers around seventy percent of its lands. The soda lake, which floods and dries seasonally, is home to thousands of flamingos and over 500 other bird species. As we explore the park, we’ll encounter a variety of wildlife, including monkeys, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, buffaloes, elephants, and, with a little bit of luck, lions lounging in trees. The park is renowned for its diverse landscapes, ranging from open grassy plains to primate-filled woodlands and baobab-dotted cliffs. After a full day of exploration, we’ll return to our accommodations, where we’ll be able to unwind and savor a delicious meal in our comfortable quarters.

DAY 3

Serengeti National Park

Following breakfast, we embark on a journey towards the fertile highlands where the Iraqw people cultivate wheat, coffee, and corn. En route, we traverse the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, allowing us a panoramic view of the awe-inspiring Ngorongoro Crater before continuing our expedition to the Serengeti National Park, which we anticipate reaching by noon. This park is Tanzania’s largest, encompassing a staggering 15,000 square kilometers and featuring an array of landscapes and habitats, including grassy plains, swamps, lakes, savannah, and mountains. It’s also the site of the annual wildebeest, zebra, and antelope migration, with the possibility of encountering thousands of animals searching for food and water, depending on the season. After an extensive game drive, we retire to the Seronera Valley for dinner and an overnight stay.

DAY 4

Serengeti

This entire day is set aside for game drives upon the Serengeti. The Serengeti, the habitat of an abundance of wildlife such as impala, buffalo, crocodile, and hippo, is more well-known for its great migrating herds of zebra, antelope, and wildebeest. The animals’ trek is determined by the rainfall and varies from year to year. In November and December the animals move from the northern region, dominated by woodlands and hills, to the grassy plains of the south. During the longer rainy season from April to June, they return to the north. Apart from the migrating herds, we may have the opportunity to see the resident predators, leopard, cheetah, and lion, fulfilling their role in the circle of life.
After an unforgettable day, we will return to our accommodation for relaxation, dinner and our overnight sleep on The Endless Plain.

DAY 5

Serengeti to Ngorongoro

Following breakfast, your itinerary will take you on a drive from Serengeti National Park to the Ngorongoro Crater. Upon first sight, the Ngorongoro Crater may appear to be a forgotten world, nestled within the steep volcanic walls of a pristine wilderness. This expansive terrain features sweeping savannah, pockets of acacia woodland, and sparkling lakes and swamps, all formed by the collapse of a massive volcano some two to three million years ago.

Descending into the Crater is an exciting adventure in its own right. Once you reach the floor, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a plethora of wildlife, including wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, and over 500 bird species. The Crater also offers an unparalleled opportunity to view the endangered black rhino, which occasionally emerges from the open grasslands.

After spending a full afternoon exploring the Crater, you’ll travel to your accommodation in Karatu for dinner and an overnight stay.

DAY 6

Tarangire National Park

After breakfast we make the short drive to Tarangire National Park. Tarangire, well known for its large elephant herds, consists of a diversity of landscapes, from seasonal swamps to savanna with the Tarangire River wending its way through the parklands. From the open top of our safari truck we seek to encounter many animals including zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, elephant and giraffe. It is possible that we will have the experience of seeing simba stalking his prey or leopards watching whilst relaxing in the trees above. After lunch in the park, with our adventure at an end, we return to Arusha replete with our cache of images of the African wilds to take home with us and carry through our life’s mysterious journey.
